Procrastination Rears its Ugly Head.

I am so totally procrastinating today.  What’s new?  One of my favorite things to do.

I head down to Tucson this afternoon for the Best Bead Show this weekend.

Am I packed up and ready to go?  No.  I have a kajillion beads still to clean.  I’m going a new route this show.  I’m doing funky, fast and furious spacers.  Oooooo.

Everyone can afford spacers, right?  But I don’t mean just any spacers.  These are organic and streamlined for some really cool stringing options.  I do have a couple pieces made up but as I said, I’m procrastinating and haven’t photographed them.  I haven’t even decided on what I want my display to look like for this show or how I’m going to display these spacers for the most impact.

Ok.  I’m starting to stress myself out a bit.

Sounds like it’s going to be the best show ever, doesn’t it?

The Word “Stuff”

I love the word ’stuff’.

A while back I was informed that it was not good for business to call your work ’stuff’.  I work very hard not to do that because, you know, my work is important to me and I wouldn’t want to undervalue it (which I probably do anyway) and wouldn’t want to give off the impression that I don’t care about it, right?

I have even cyber-preached about valuing your work and the power of your words.

So I wonder…am I just lazy?  Because I love me some slang.  It just feels good.  Or, because I still want to call my work ’stuff’, am I undervaluing it in my own head?  Hm.

How about you? Do you look at your work and think, ‘eh.  It’s ok.’  Or do you look at it and marvel and can’t understand why everyone doesn’t want three of each piece.

I love the confidence I see in people who love their finished work.  I don’t get it because I don’t have that quality myself.  I am very hard on myself, always knowing it can be better.  In some ways that’s good, in some ways it can be a real drag.

NYC Has Everything You Need or Want.

A couple of weekends ago we were in New York City. I will be honest and tell you that I did not want to go. I’ve been traveling so much lately and am picking up shows left and right this year that I wanted to stay put for a while. But, my husband talked me into it.

I knew it was going to be a great trip when we arrived at our hotel and I looked across the street to see this:

and this:

and this:

And, I was in walking distance of Metalliferous. Which I walked to on Saturday. Because their web site said they had Saturday hours. And didn’t mention anything about suspending Saturday hours for the summer. BAD Metalliferous!

Bead Design with the Principle of Economy…

Huh?

Stitched Heart Bead

I know. That title sounds confusing. The only reason I use that title is because it’s the title of a post the explains something that I’ve been going towards:

Simplicity

Although, the article pertains to graphic design, I am translating it to bead design. A little background first…

My Stitched Beads (read about them here) came from a popular style in beadmaking where you put everything you possibly can fit onto the surface of the bead. For some people it works, for others, less is more.

That is where I am going with this…

Economy in Design.

Use only what you need to express your point.

No more.

No less.

Come to think of it, I think I did learn that in my one graphic design classes way back when. Of course, I didn’t go into graphic design…but I should have taken more classes on it!

Anyway, it’s a good article. If you’re serious about your bead designs or just want to learn more about how to make a visual impact you should read it. It could be translated into many other areas too…like writing and words. This post that I’m writing definitely does not use the Principle of Economy in Design. But I’m working on something that will hopefully use that concept.

Ten Buck Sale…

Regarding yesterday’s post and all those beads that I showed…did you know that I’ve been having Ten Buck sales?  Two so far in the last month.  All those beads you saw in yesterday’s post?  I’ve been listing them on my site slowly but surely for $9.99 each.

Why didn’t you know about this?  Because you probably aren’t on my mailing list. (subscribe over there on the left).  I email immediately when I’m done posting them.  Yes, the link to the Ten Buck sale is there on my site under “catalog by style” but they have been flying out the door as soon as my email goes out so there isn’t much left for the casual browser.

I have been so busy that my newsletter hasn’t been weekly and it hasn’t been much of a newsletter so rest assured, you won’t be spammed and you can unsubscribe any time you like.  I hope to see you there!
